Christmas Tree Topper
Even if you are not all that religious, getting ready for Christmas is still one of the most elaborate and difficult tasks of the year. You need a Christmas tree, a nativity scene, outdoor and indoor Christmas lights, antique ornaments passed down in your family, and, of course, Christmas gifts. Then there is all the preparation involved in sending out holiday cards, preparing a fancy holiday meal, and getting your clothes ready for the trip to church. But to me, the most important part is the figure that, both literally and symbolically sits above everything else: the Christmas tree topper.

Most families have a Christmas tree topper that they use every year, but in my family it was different. One year, we would have a Christmas tree angel, while the next year we would use a Christmas star. A few years ago, we actually had a pretty outlandish Christmas tree topper. We decided to make something by hand all together, but we could not decide on a theme. My sister wanted to make a Christmas tree star, while my brother wanted to make one of the camels that the wise men were riding. I thought it would be nice to make a pumpkin (I was still in a Halloween mood) and my father and mother wanted to make a turkey and an angel respectively.
What we finally decided was to each make a part of it. What we ended up with was one of the most outlandish Christmas tree toppers ever made. It had different faces, shapes, and body parts sticking out at every angle imaginable. We loved it, but objectively speaking, it was just a little bit terrifying. One of my good friends brought her 5 year old son over and, when he saw it, he started to cry right away.
Of course, most people have much more conventional tastes than that! Usually, an angel Christmas ornament or a Christmas light star looks best at the top of a tree, but it is nice to be able to mix it up every now and again. Just make sure that, if your Christmas tree topper is a family heirloom, you are always careful about putting it up. It might seem like a good idea to let your youngest son be a big boy and climb up on the stepladder with the Christmas star but, when he drops it and breaks it, no one is going to be all that happy about it!
Table Top Christmas Tree Decorating
Choosing A Table top Christmas tree
Until I had my own apartment, I had the idea that a table top Christmas tree was just for old people who didn’t have the energy to deal with a full sized tree. However, my very first apartment was barely big enough for my cat and I, so I had some issues when it came to the holidays. There was no way that I was going to not decorate for my favorite holiday; I just had to be a little bit creative. So, when my mother showed up with a three foot table top Christmas tree, I was determined to make it work for me. So, I set up the little tree on my coffee table and decorated it as best as possible. By the time that I was done with my decorating, I was pretty happy with everything. The candles in my windows looked wonderful and I positioned my coffee table so that my brightly lit table top Christmas tree was very visible from the outside. Quite a few neighbors complimented it.

A table top Christmas tree can solve a lot of decorating issues for small spaces and for people who simply don’t have the energy or means to go all out with decorating. Sure, old people will appreciate the little decorated trees in their retirement homes. There are lots of people who will spend their holidays in a hospital and won’t be able to enjoy the freedom of their own home traditions and décor. A table top Christmas tree would do wonders to cheer them up and fit nicely into any size hospital room.
As the years have gone on, I’ve known more and more people who have decided that decorating has become too much of a burden for them. Instead of getting a live and full sized tree, they’ve decided to get an artificial table top Christmas tree. They still decorate the rest of their houses; they simply don’t have to deal with the rearranging of furniture to accommodate a huge tree for one month of the year. They don’t have to deal with little pine needles being dragged into every room of the house. And, they don’t have to deal with dragging it out to the curb after the holiday season is over. Nope, an artificial table top tree can simply be stored in a closet, basement or attic. In fact, you might not even bother taking the decorations off of it from year to year. Think about how much simpler parts of your holidays could be.
Artificial Christmas Tree or not?
Part of the joys of Christmas are the decorations, the carols and the scent of fresh pine inside of your house. There is a downside to some of those joys as well. The fresh pine smell that comes from your Christmas tree can be a beautiful smell to invigorate your home but the pine needles being traipsed all through your house may not be that much fun! Our dogs usually like to take a few hundred sips of water from the tree stand every few hours as well as dig up the pot. The branches on the tree may not be sturdy and become flimsy, dropping ornaments over the floor. For millions of people, the joys of having a live Christmas tree in their home is simply too much trouble which involves too much cleaning up.
Buying an artificial Christmas tree can remove all of those troubles in one easy swoop. The branches are sturdy and can hold heavier ornaments. The dogs will soon work out that there isn’t any water to drink and there won't be any needles all over the floor every morning and a carcass to remove in January. You will, of course, miss the fresh scent of pine but you can compensate for that by getting a live wreath for your house. Or, you can get some scented air freshener or scented candles. It won’t be the same but the convenience of getting an artificial Christmas tree may make it worth your while.
The cost of an artificial Christmas tree can be quite a bit more than a live tree. But remember, you are buying the artificial Christmas tree for life not just the season. Check out the after Christmas sales and you might find a great bargain after the holidays are over. You may even be lucky enough to get an artificial tree cheaper than you would have paid for a live tree. Yes, you’ll have to wait for the next Christmas, but, think of the savings you will have mad, more to spend on gifts!
There is a variety of artificial Christmas trees. You can find prelit trees, decorated trees, pine lookalike trees, tinsel trees – whatever you need to make your life easier. If you have storage room for the tree, you’re all set. Most of the artificial trees come apart in sections, making storage much more convenient. Just pack them in the box and pop them in the shed until next year. Some people don't even pack their tree up, they just move it fully decorated to the basement until the next season.
If you are concerned about the state of the environment you can get a great deal of satisfaction by saving a tree once a year. If you buy an artificial Christmas tree instead a live one you will be playing a small part in saving the planet. Sounds a bit silly, right? Not necessarily. If you aren’t supporting your local Christmas tree farm or sales, that’s one less tree that has to see the end of its days. Of course, someone else may end up having that same tree cut down, but at least you can know that you played your part. There isn’t a constant need to grow trees for years and years, simply to cut them down for one simple celebration. After a few weeks, those trees are thrown away. If you buy an artificial Christmas tree, you won’t have that worry. You’ll know that your perfectly shaped Christmas tree will be around for years to come either stored in a box of waiting in the basement!
This is one of my favourite trees and I thought you might like it as well.

Living Christmas Tree
There are many things in this world that can seem like a waste, and this is why many like to recycle. Once you drink a can of soda, it seems like a bad idea to toss that aluminum into a dump when it can be recycled and reused. This is something that I think about each year when we take down our tree and then pull it outside to be taken away. It seems like a waste for that tree to have grown for so many years, only to be cut, decorated, and then thrown away a few weeks later. This is why I am considering a living Christmas tree this year, and many others are doing the same.
A living Christmas tree is one that you can use in your home for the holidays, but instead of throwing it out or grinding it up for mulch, you can plant it in your yard. They generally come in a container that needs to be watered and is much like any other plant you have in your home. You get the beauty and the lovely smell of a real, live, Christmas tree without feeling bad that the tree will be dead within a few weeks.
Once you are done, you can plant this in your yard, but not everyone can do this. However, that does not mean someone else might not want it, or that you can’t donate that tree to your community. There are many parks and other public areas that could use trees, and those are great places to give your living Christmas tree a new home. They may not be able to plant them in December, but they can when spring comes. This might even be something you can organize in your community. All of those who wish to have a living tree but have no yard space to spare can donate to the community.
Don’t forget about the other type of living Christmas tree when you are decorating for the holidays. If you have a pine in your yard, this can be something you can decorate as a part of your holiday traditions. Sometimes, those outside are the most beautiful Christmas trees of all. They can be lit and decorated just like the ones in your home, and if you are lucky enough to get snow, you will have something beautiful to share with the neighborhood. Some people even take down all decorations from this type of tree after Christmas, but leave the lights on the tree all year.
Outdoor Christmas Tree
You may have a tree in your home for the holidays, but you and your family are usually the only ones who enjoy it until you have guests over to your home. If you want to spread more cheer, but don’t feel like hanging lights and other assorted things outside for décor, you can always have an outdoor Christmas tree. These can be a great touch when you don’t want to have a lot, but want to bring a little of the spirit you feel out to your neighbors and anyone who might walk or drive by.

If you already have a pine tree outside in your yard, you already have a great outdoor Christmas tree that you can use. What is really great is that your tree is not just for Christmas; it grows all throughout the year. You can even decorate it for other holidays if you want to. You can find some good battery operated lights that are okay to hang outside, you can use those on your tree without having to worry about running extension cords to the house for power.
When you apply any type of ornament or decoration to your outdoor Christmas tree, you have to be sure they are securely tied on to the tree. When you hang ornaments inside, you can usually have them dangle from a hook, but those trees do not have to contend with wind, rain, and snow. What you should do is find some type of bendable wire you can use for this purpose. You could also use twist ties that normally come with storage and garbage bags to be sure everything is secure. If you can find them in green, they will blend right in with the tree and no one will know what you have used to keep things on the tree.
If you have a porch, you may be able to put up an artificial outdoor Christmas tree, but you have to use the same precautions with the ornaments as you would with any other tree. You also have to be sure that you have the tree secured as well. It won’t matter if your ornaments stay on if the tree blows off your porch and down the street. You can find ways to secure them so that you can enjoy them year after year, and you wont have to go hunting down the street for it each morning when you wake up.
Prelit Christmas Tree
Buying a prelit Christmas tree
When my grandmother entered a retirement home, the holidays looked bleak for her. The staff did their best to decorate the halls and shared spaces, but it was up to the patients to decorate their own rooms, if so desired. My grandmother desperately missed having a Christmas tree, but there simply wasn’t enough of room in her small room. To surprise her, we purchased her an artificial prelit Christmas tree. It stood about 3 feet tall and had all of the twinkling lights already attached. There was no work involved when setting it up. All that was required was plugging it in and adding some other decorations. She loved it. To her, it was a symbol of still having some independence inside of her. The holidays could still be celebrated. That prelit Christmas tree lit up her room all day long and she stared at it when falling asleep at night. That was her last Christmas on this planet and I was happy to know that she enjoyed the holiday as she would have if living at home.

A prelit Christmas tree isn’t just for elderly people and nursing homes. It is for people who hate fighting with putting the strands of lights on their trees each year. Yes, having a prelit Christmas tree means that you don’t have the fresh pine smell of a real tree in your house during the holidays, but you will find yourself not stressing over some of the decorating. After seeing my grandmother’s tree and realizing that every year I struggle with the lights, I purchased a full size artificial prelit Christmas tree. I was always amazed at how the strands of lights would get so tangled even though they were packed away so carefully. And, I no longer had to fight with figuring out how many strands were needed and how to hide the cords decoratively. I don’t have to do that anymore. I simply put my prelit Christmas tree up, plug it in and put on the rest of the decorations and the holidays are much less bothersome in my household. My husband appreciates the fact that he no longer has to spend at least an hour untangling and figuring out the strands of lights. I appreciate the fact that it frees up a few extra hours and allows me more time to relax or enjoy time with my family.
Getting a prelit Christmas tree was a great decision in my household. As a matter of fact, after finding out that we have a prelit Christmas tree, several other friends decided to join us in the stress-free joys of decorating. There are too many other things to stress about for the holidays, why does decorating the tree have to be one of them?
